nog een paar dingen over 3.5

In July of this year (2003), WotC will be releasing revised versions of the core rulebooks (Players Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manual). Each of the revised core rulebooks will contain 320 pages and retail for $29.99.

WotC's official announcement concerning the revised core rulebooks.
WotC have posted cover images of the revised core rulebooks in their online product catalogue. Of these, only the PHB appears to have changed, so chances are that the DMG and MM covers are just the old covers used in the catalogue as place-fillers.
WotC appear to have come up with a logo for D&D 3.5 (pictured right). Interestingly, the logo actually contains the characters "3.5", which implies that they have officially adopted that as a means of referring to the revised core rulebooks, at least during the run-up period.
WotC have posted a FAQ about the revised books.

veranderingen per boek

The updates will will be written by Ed Stark, and will give examples of the types of revisions they'll be making, grouped around a theme with an example from each book. This one focuses on character generation.

PHB: Racial Benefits. The example given is exotic weapons specific to certain races, like the Ugrosh. Dwarves now have "Weapon Familiarity" as a racial ability, which lets them treat it as a martial weapon.

MM: Monsters as Characters. Will have material on playing certain monsters as characters, though not as detailed as that in Savage Species. There's a sidebar giving the information for the ogre (though it's not clear whether it's final or complete).

DMG: Prestige classes. Will include the Spellsword, an updated Dragon Disciple, and a few world-specific classes (just as examples of how to do them) including the Red Wizard. All the current ones will return, but it sounds like they might be considering some changes. They've separated PrCs into seven roles: race, party role, situational, iconic, game function (does things other characters can't, like the Spellsword), transformation (turns into something else), and world-specific."

Aitch Eye has summarised the info on D&D 3.5 to be found in Dragon Magazine #305:
PH: "Now, we have only four basic types of actions: free, standard, move, and full-round. The lists of what fits where have been cleaned up, and the presentation of each action type is clearer and more concise." Mostly they were trying to make the chapter "much more accessible."

*********************
nog een paar belangrijk punten:
*********************

The game now assumes that you use a battlemat (or something of the sort) and minis, and the rules are written to reflect this aspect of the game.

*********************
1) Unclear rules. Attacks of Opportunity were given as an example of something that will be re-edited for clarity.
2) Underdeveloped rules. Prestige classes were originally just a small section. This has ballooned into something that practically every D20
supplement has as content. The rules for creating them will be expanded.
3) "Broken" rules. The "H" spells (Harm, Haste, and Heal) were given as examples of spells that will be re-addressed.

********************

I know people want to know character classes; four of them will have some major changes. Those playing Bards, Druids, Monks, and Rangers will want to see what happens. These "tweener" classes as Skip Williams named them will see some improvements and some of their abilities will be stretched out. Rangers will definitely no longer be front loaded with their feats. However their spell selection and abilities will be beefed up for mid and high levels of play.

********************

Spells will be cleaned up. Some heavy changes will also be done to some. Haste was especially a hot topic. The new haste will still have +4 AC but will not give a partial action anymore. Instead it will provide an extra attack. This was done because it was making the Quicken metamagic feat undesirable. Why shell out for a feat when a spell does this already and does more? Speaking of Partial actions, they are gone. There will be move, move-equivalent, standard and full actions. If there is a need for an exception (say the Zombie) it will be part of the zombie listing.

You've waited -- you've wondered -- you've waited some more. This week we finally get around to showing off the new haste spell that everyone's been harping about. The big question is, were we just procrastinating, or intentionally prolonging your antici ... (wait for it) ... pation?

The spell had several problems as published -- mainly, it was just too good, especially for sorcerers. It overshadowed most other 3rd-level spells and made the Quicken Spell feat largely redundant. Haste was really meant to be a fighter buff, but wizards and sorcerers seemed to be the main beneficiaries. This new version brings it back to its intended function and should also eliminate the confusion that all those extra actions were causing.

As always, remember that nothing is complete or final until you buy the book in the store.

Haste
Transmutation
Level: Brd 3, Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Targets: One creature/level, no two of which can be more than 30 ft. apart
Duration: 1 round/level
Saving Throw: Fortitude negates (harmless)
Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless)

The transmuted creatures move and act more quickly than normal. This extra speed has several effects.

When making a full attack action, a hasted creature may make one extra attack with any weapon he is holding. The attack is made using the creature's full base attack bonus, plus any modifiers appropriate to the situation. (This effect is not cumulative with similar effects, such as that provided by a weapon of speed, nor does it actually grant an extra action, so you can't use it to cast a second spell or otherwise take an extra action in the round.)

A hasted creature gains a +1 bonus on attack rolls and a +1 dodge bonus to AC and Reflex saves. Any condition that makes you lose your Dexterity bonus to Armor Class (if any) also makes you lose dodge bonuses.

All of the hasted creature's modes of movement (including land movement, burrow, climb, fly, and swim) increase by 30 feet, to a maximum of twice the subject's normal speed using that form of movement. This increase counts as an enhancement bonus, and it affects the creature's jumping distance as normal for increased speed.

Multiple haste effects don't stack. Haste dispels and counters slow.

Material Component: A shaving of licorice root.

(?) geschrapt?
