There is no theme shared by all of Alara. Rather, each of the 5 Shards has its own theme. Each Shard is primary in one of the five colors and secondary in the two colors which are allies of the primary color. Here are the 5 Shards and their themes:
1. Bant
Primary: white
Secondary: blue, green
Theme: Enchantments.
2. Esper
Primary: blue
Secondary: white, black
Theme: Artifacts. From what I saw, I got the very strong impression that there will be a significant number of Esper-associated colored artifacts.
3. Grixis
Primary: black
Secondary: blue, red
Theme: Graveyard.
4. Jund
Primary: red
Secondary: black, green
Theme: Controlled Chaos. This is a tricky one, and I'm not sure this is the best description. It looks like there will be lot of random effects, growing/shrinking creatures, etc. However, it is unmistakably mentioned that this chaos can be and is controlled/manipulated by savvy planeswalkers to tilt the odds in their favor.
5. Naya
Primary: green
Secondary: red, white
Theme: Lands. I get the impression that creature lands may make a return, though this is not as strong an impression as the colored artifacts one. It may just be land animation effects.
Note that the colors refer to the structure, not the theme. Thus green cards will be associated with Naya, Jund, or Bant, with more from Naya than from either of the others. There is no indication of a color-matters theme, though I suspect that we may see some of this to support interblock synergy.

Ik krijg een beetje een deja-vu. Hoeveel nieuws is hier nu werkelijk geintroduceerd? Kleuren die samenwerken? Dat hadden we al langer. En ook de thema's zijn verschrikkelijk voorspelbaar.
Zwart doet iets met graveyards (allicht, ze doen al 10 jaar iets met graveyards). Blauw doet iets met artifacts, maar dat had ik je met Tolarian Academy al kunnen voorspellen. Groen doet iets met landjes maar bij de introductie van Wild Growth had ik dat al. Om maar niet te spreken over rood, wat iets met chaos doet waarover de auteur een beetje vreemd lijkt te doen. Volgens mij zijn van alle kaarten met "Chaos" in de naam die er geprint zijn 90% al rood.
Aan de andere kant, vlieg maar op met het verhaal en breng gewoon weer een set karton uit wat iedereen moet hebben en waarvan minstens 1 kaart ondanks het "uitvoerig playtesten" toch net iets te blijkt te zijn....
Zelfs wizards kan op den duur niet meer heel vernieuwend zijn.
Gewoon mijn 2 cent.

Uiteraard heeft Sengir Vampire deels gelijk. Alhoewel Wizards toch vaak ook nieuwe dingen introduceerd die 'unheard of' zijn. Het idee wat hier beschreven wordt geeft mij een gevoel van Ravnica en die guild crap; not good dus...

Hmm. Ook al is het wel erg somber zo, je hebt een punt. Nu moeten ze wel bij de standaard color pie blijven, anders is die ook niets meer waard, maar dan inderdaad niet net doen of het zwaar vernieuwend is.
Achja, de enkel commerciële weg zijn ze al lang geleden ingeslagen, denk ik. Stel je verwachtingen bij en wie weet wordt het weer een leuk spel :)

Ravnica guilds waren gaaf! Zowel qua verhaal als qua uitvoering. Heel de Ravnica setting vind ik erg tot de verbeelding spreken, eigenlijk.

Ik denk dat ze toch op een of andere manier wel wat leuks kunnen verzinnen.
@ commerciële weg van Wizards: Wizards blijft een bedrijf en een bedrijf moet winst blijven maken (iets met economie enzo) en dit is schijnbaar de beste manier.

Ondanks dat een bedrijf winst moet maken, mag er uit de bedrijfsvoering wel íets van liefde voor het spel, waar het uiteindelijk om begonnen is, blijken, nietwaar? En bijvoorbeeld steeds kaarten uitbrengen die rare (of extra rare) zijn, en die vervolgens ook stukken beter maken, zodat ze nog sneller nog duurder worden, is daar geen goed voorbeeld van.

Ondanks dat een bedrijf winst moet maken, mag er uit de bedrijfsvoering wel íets van liefde voor het spel, waar het uiteindelijk om begonnen is, blijken, nietwaar? En bijvoorbeeld steeds kaarten uitbrengen die rare (of extra rare) zijn, en die vervolgens ook stukken beter maken, zodat ze nog sneller nog duurder worden, is daar geen goed voorbeeld van.
Wel een goed voorbeeld daarvan is het steeds vaker terug brengen van golden oldie's in FNM foils of Textless versie. Al haalt dit wel de uniekheid van de kaarten onderuit, doordat er weer meer versies op de markt komen. Overigens is dat het grootste probleem van Magic; reprints! Ze zouden er mee moeten kappen... of een veel strengere lijst moeten opstellen met kaarten die niet geprint mogen worden. (Bijv. Damnation echt onmogelijk dat ze Wrath of God reprinten of Calciderm als reprint van Blastoderm imho)
Om terug te komen op mijn Ravnica statement: misschien is het thema leuk (al vond ik van niet) maar de sterkte van de kaarten suckt enorm. Uiteraard is het niet de bedoeling dat de set overpowered had moeten zijn, maar er zijn weinig kaarten noemenswaardig genoeg om over te blijven voor T1 of Extended op een enkele na.

Prerelease card is bekend...het is een mystic (geen verrassing hier) en een Planeswalker!
Ajani Vengeant.....hmmm was er niet een Ajani Goldmane in Lorwyn? Lijkt op een nieuwe versie. Het subtype is ook 'Ajani', dus de planeswalker ('legend') rule verbiedt dat ze tegelijk in het spel zijn...

Info over de shards.
Our creative team went way over the top to really flesh out each of these five worlds, give them their own distinct flavor and feeling. The story of Shards of Alara is that there was this plane, called Alara, that was a very good, rich source of mana, and someone or something shattered the world, so that it split into five different shards. And when that happened each of five shards was completely cut off from two colors of mana.
So in Bant, you have a primarily white world that does have blue and green mana, so it has three colors of magic, but citizens of Bant have never seen fire magic, and have never seen necromancy. And you can imagine a world cut off from those colors for hundreds of years has evolved to be a very utopian society but also a very orderly society. So you have knights, you have angels, you have aven, you have rocs, you have a pretty peaceful society for the most part. Combat when it does happen is very chivalrous and honorable and generally takes place between heroes from each side, and is very ceremonial.
And the total opposite is true of Grixis, which is the plane that is totally cut off from green or white mana. So there is no access to life mana there. So what few humans that are there eek out an existence where they are constantly on the run from necromancers that want to steal their life energy to fuel their spells. It is a world that is a horrible place to live if you are a human being because the land is almost like rotting flesh. It's just a world of decay. It's filled with demons, vampires, goblins, skeletons... you name it, if it's horrible it lives in Grixis.
Similarly in Junt, that's the primarily red world, it's a world of chaos and fire. It's a very rough world to have to eek out an existence, so the humans there are very barbaric. And there's a very strict food chain that is topped by the dragons. So they're the apex predators, and the rest of the time the other creatures on Junt try to avoid them.
Naya is the primarily green world, it is a very bountiful world, it is cut off from black and blue. It's a very hedonistic society. There are elves, cat people, and humans, as well as very big creatures ... beasts.
And then there is Esper, the primarily blue world,that is cut off from red and green. So it's a very orderly society that is focused on measuring things, and preoccupied with knowledge and wisdom. In the art you can see even the clouds are measured in Esper.

Informatie van PS-Games.
Release: 3 oktober 2008
Het nieuwe Magic Block Shards of Alara kent een vliegende start met de spectaculaire eerste, gelijknamige set Shards of Alara! Magic gaat met deze set terug naar de traditionele fantasy setting uit de oudere series. Echter, uiteraard wel met enkele grensverleggende innovaties, zoals de terugkeer van drie sets in een Block!
Shards of Alara zal de eerste Magic set zijn met enkele ingrijpende vernieuwingen. Deze zullen voorlopig ook in toekomstige sets worden doorgevoerd. Het betreft het volgende:
Grootte van de set
Uit feedback van de Magic spelers community is gebleken dat het jaarlijks aantal uitgebrachte kaarten te hoog werd. Daarom wordt de grootte van de sets aangepast. De Shards of Alara set zal bestaan uit 249 kaarten. De twee kleinere expansies in het Shards of Alara Block tellen elk 145 kaarten.
Rarity
Ook de opbouw van de kaartsets zal verschilen met eerdere Magic sets. Met de introductie van een nieuwe rarity - de Mythic Rare - bevat de Shards of Alara set nu 15 Mythic rares, 53 rares, 60 uncommons, 101 commons en 20 basic lands. In ongeveer 1 op de 8 boosters zal een Mythic rare te vinden zijn in plaats van een reguliere rare. Voor de uitbreidingssets in het Shards of Alara Block zal de opbouw bestaan uit 10 Mythic rares, 35 rares, 40 uncommons en 60 commons.
Tevens zal er een parallelle foil set van alle kaarten via de boosters te verkrijgen zijn.
Producten
Boosters
Door de vervanging van een common kaart door een basic land kaart zal een booster voortaan bestaan uit 16 kaarten: 1 rare, 3 uncommons, 10 commons, 1 basic land, en 1 tip/token kaart. Daarbij geldt dat in ongeveer 1 op de 8 boosters, de rare vervangen zal zijn door een Mythic rare.
Tournament Packs
Iedere grote set van een Block zal ook weer Tournament Packs bevatten. Deze ready-to-play packs tellen 75 willekeurige kaarten en een set spelregels.
Intro Packs (vervangt Theme Decks)
Een nieuw Magic product: de Intro Pack. Dit is het beste product voor nieuwe spelers om het spel te leren en tevens voor bestaande spelers om de voordelen van de nieuwe set te ondervinden. Vanaf de Shards of Alara set zal deze Intro Pack een waardige vervanger zijn van de Theme Decks. Shards of Alara biedt 5 verschillende Intro Packs.
Een Intro pack zal bestaan uit:
- 41 kaarten tellend pre-constructed deck, inclusief 1 premium foil rare
(zichtbaar aan de voorzijde van de Intro Pack) en 1 non-premium rare,
- 1 booster van de huidige set,
- 1 learn-to-play hulpmiddel voor de beginnende Magic speler,
- 1 hulpmiddel met strategische tips over de set.
Fatpacks
Bij elke set zal er een Fatpack worden uitgebracht met daarin:
- 8 boosters,
- kaartenbox,
- player's guide,
- learn-to-play hulpmiddel,
- een boek over de set. Bij Shards of Alara is dit een exemplaar van A Planeswalkers Guide to Alara.
Planeswalkers & nieuwe speltechnieken
De meest sterke wezens uit het Magic Universum zijn terug! Shards of Alara introduceert nieuwe, meerkleurige Planeswalkers kaarten! Een voorbeeld is Sarkhan Vol, welke zowel rood als groen zal zijn.
Shards of Alara zal tevens enkele nieuwe speltechnieken bieden waarmee je nog sterker het spel in kunt gaan. Meer informatie over deze innovaties volgt.
Accessoires
Een nieuwe set betekent ook meteen nieuwe accessoires: kijk hier voor een overzicht van de nieuwe deckboxen, sleeves, portfolio's en van de nieuwe speelmat!
Organized Play
Uiteraard worden er weer diverse toernooien georganiseerd voorafgaande aan de release van de nieuwe Shards of Alara set. Echter, ook in het Organized Play zijn enkele wijzigingen van kracht: Lees hier meer over de wijzigingen!

Prereleases
Er zal nog maar 1 weekend van Prereleases zijn. Dit is voor Shards of Alara het weekend van 27 en 28 september.
Het type toernooi dat tijdens dit weekend mag worden gehouden is Sealed Deck of 2 Headed Giant Sealed Deck met daarnaast de mogelijkheid tot Open Dueling. (Dit was voorheen de Theme Deck Challenge, maar in verband met de verwisseling van de Theme Decks voor Intro Decks is de naam aangepast.) Hiervan is alleen het Open Dueling non-sanctioned.
Launch Parties (voorheen Release Events)
De Release Events zijn ook omgedoopt. Deze heten voortaan Launch Parties. De Shards of Alara Lauch Parties vinden plaats op 3, 4, en 5 oktober (dus inclusief de vrijdag!). Het type toernooi dat hier mag worden gehouden is Theme Tournament Sealed Deck of League Play Sealed Deck met daarnaast de mogelijkheid tot Open Dueling. De Open Dueling is uiteraard wederom non-sanctioned, maar ook de League Play Sealed Deck is non-sanctioned.

Het is wel een kleine nachtmerrie om alle scenario's door te rekenen als er veel Creatures met exalted in play zijn inderdaad...neigt een beetje naar Banding.
Die Etherium Sculptor heeft wel de neiging om erg grof te worden overigens...aangezien alle permanents van de Esper shart allemaal artifacts zijn.

Het is wel een kleine nachtmerrie om alle scenario's door te rekenen als er veel Creatures met exalted in play zijn inderdaad...neigt een beetje naar Banding.
Die Etherium Sculptor heeft wel de neiging om erg grof te worden overigens...aangezien alle permanents van de Esper shart allemaal artifacts zijn.
Hmm ik moet me nog inschrijven voor die Pre-Release. Nadeel is dat jullie op zaterdag gaan, terwijl ik die avond mijn feestje vier :( Nouja ben ik er iig op de Trefpunt draft dit weekend!

Check! Daarom is het ook fucking irritant als er veel verschillende beestjes liggen die allemaal exalted hebben, dan moet je dus ieder scenario 'doorrekenen'.
